Uthayakumar may lose leg: wife

KUALA LUMPUR - THE wife of Internal Security Act detainee P. Uthayakumar alleged on Sunday that her husband might lose his left leg due to improper diabetic treatment.

S. Indradevi said the hospital had neglected Uthayakumar whose left toe was now swollen and had turned black. Her husband has diabetes.

'I visited him yesterday and was shocked to see his condition. We have appealed to the police to allow him to seek treatment with a private medical specialist but he was denied. Uthaya also has a heart problem.

'I fear that his condition may deteriorate and his leg amputated because of possible diabetic gangrene.

'Though we are not experts or doctors, we can clearly see his condition is turning from bad to worst," she told reporters after lodging a report at the Brickfields police station.

Present were Teluk Intan member of Parliament M. Manogaran, lawyer N. Surendran and about 50 Uthayakumar supporters.

Ms Indradevi said Uthayakumar had been taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital following a Sessions Court order on Feb 3.

'At the hospital, the medical officer took x-ray of his left leg and told us that Uthaya will not be warded as there were not enough beds. The answer given is totally ridiculous.

'I was also informed that the detention camp in Kamunting, Perak, did not prepare a proper diet for Uthayakumar.

'He's a diabetic patient but his daily meals contained high sugar,' she said, urging the authorities to take swift action on this matter. -- (This news was published in Singapore The Straits Times)
